With Tom Thumb Out, What's Next for Highland Park Village?

The news was hardly shocking, even for infrequent visitors to Highland Park Village. Amid Carolina Herrera, Chanel and Dior, the small Tom Thumb grocery store has always looked a wee bit, well, weird in the center.

Now comes word that the market is closing sometime in the next year—with Safeway, Tom Thumb's parent company, on the selling block too. What's next for the complex that has, in recent tenant moves, sought to go even more upscale than it already is?

While rumored new tenants include Balenciaga, nearby residents and patrons have long clamored for a boutique hotel in the space. If not, the venue could be split up a la University Park Village, to make way for an Etro and/or Prada location. To be continued..
